Charges are stored on the surface of the porous electrode through adsorption and desorption of electrolyte ions, resulting in high power density and a fast charging/discharging speed. However, due to its low energy density compared to batteries, supercapacitors are mainly used as an auxiliary power device for electric vehicles and have limited application fields.Professor Lee's research team dramatically improved the energy storage characteristics of supercapacitors by using a polymer electrolyte based on an ionic liquid with high electrochemical stability and a porous carbon having a three-dimensional connection structure designed to facilitate ion transport.Professor Lee Keun Hyung said, "Since a method to overcome the low ion mobility of ionic liquid-based electrolytes has been developed, we expect the competitiveness of supercapacitors that have not been relatively noticeable compared to batteries to increase."
